Kinja'd!!!

This toad was found in our yard and has nothing to do with this post other than the compulsion to include visual content. The population is slowly rebounding post-drought, which is good to eliminate creepy crawlies. They get much bigger.

I am considering upgrading the tires on the Sunchaser. With the new cooling overhaul and suspension bushings, I am taking longer trips and driving it more. My wife’s newfound rally passion is also a consideration.

Right now, it has some cheap but decent Hankooks on it that have been there for about 2 years. There is no urgency to replace them, but I wonder if I would get a better and/or safer ride with a higher end tire.

I am thinking about this to avoid what I have to do today.

Kinja'd!!!

I get to write a brief to the Court of Appeal about whether an underground auger used as a waste conveyor meets the definition of a power press under California Labor Code Section 4558. SPOILER ALERT: It does not. The Plaintiff’s expert testified as follows:

Me: What was the device that caused the worker’s death?

Him: The east-west auger.

Me: Is the east-west auger a power press?

Him: No.

Me: What is the basis of your opinion that a power press may be involved?

Him: I saw a power panel at the plant that had 20 switches, and one was labeled “Press.”

Me: Did you see anything that looked like a press anywhere in view of the accident site?

Him: No.

We won, and they appealed. So I have to read all this crap and write an argument to convince the court that this case should go away. The lawyer for the other side is batshit crazy, and I hate this case.

Any ideas or tire recommendations?

Bridgestone Potenza RE-71R or Falken Azenis RT615k+ for tires.

Are you looking more for comfort or for grip? RE-71Rs are probably one of the hottest autocross tires around for street cars but they’re noisy, rough, and die quickly if you abuse them. Personally, the BFG Sport Comp 2 isn’t bad as a summer tire and it has great rain behavior but it’s still noisy.

Maybe look Continental Tires if you’re looking for more of a grand touring sort of tire with decent grip.

If you ever went ice fishing you know what an auger is.

There is one in this pic, good luck finding it

Michelin Pilot Super Sports are probably the best tire available.

Alternatively, you almost cannot go wrong with anything on the max performance list at Tire Rack. My Goodyear Eagle F1s are good, but I’ve been in other examples of my car with less forgiving suspension on the PSSs and they were better in all respects (quieter, seemed to grip better, rode smoother, etc).

Augers and presses aren’t even remotely similar! What a joke of an appeal.

What’s your tire size?

I was actually quite impressed and pleased with the cheap Hankooks on my Roadmaster.

No real point in upgrading tires for the hell of it.

A lot of newer Buicks use Continental ContiProContacts and they seem to be a very good all around tire that leans a bit towards sporty.

I personally like General Altimax RT43s for their affordability and all around goodness.

Just avoid anything from cheap Chinese manufacturers and Good(for a)Year.

Batshit Crazy is bad enough when it’s the client. I was a jury foreman in a civil case several years back where the plaintiff was pretty clearly batshit crazy. The plaintiff’s lawyer was trying hard to tone down the crazy but it wasn’t working. The defense (and his attorneys) were all super-unsympathetic as well. Basically it was crazy fucker v. raging asshole.

We found for raging asshole because asshole or not, he was in the right. It took several hours though.

Do your research on tirerack.com and tirebuyer.com and read all the reviews to identify previous buyers with similar cars and performance targets. Also helps if you are working with a budget to keep you focused on tires you can afford...

If you really want to open Pandora’s box, consider alternate tire sizes to fit your stock rims using a site like https://tiresize.com/calculator/

i imagine its tough to find “performance” tires in correct sizes for it.

but also i imagine a top tier summer performance tire would way out-grip what the chassis is capable of providing.

for the last car i had with 15in wheels that “required” performance tires... there were only pirelli p600 in correct sizes. and they were as expensive as a mich PS2 (at the time).
